OUR STORY

A name that belongs to Kottayam.

Some names are invented. Others are discovered in the identity of a place. KL05 1949 was created to carry Kottayam within it — instantly familiar to those who belong here, and meaningful to those discovering the district for the first time.

KL05 is the Regional Transport Office code associated with Kottayam. 1949 reaches deeper into the district’s story: Kottayam District was born in July 1949 when the revenue divisions were reorganised as districts during the integration of Travancore and Cochin.

This page is dedicated to Kottayam — to its streets and waterways, its classrooms and printing presses, its plantations and hills, its faiths and festivals, its political courage, its food, and above all, its people.

THE MILESTONE
1949

The birth of Kottayam District.

In 1949, Travancore and Cochin were integrated. The existing revenue divisions were renamed as districts, Diwan Peshkars gave way to District Collectors, and the Kottayam District came into being in July 1949. The year therefore stands as an administrative milestone in modern Kottayam history.

JULY · 1949

A district takes its place in history.

Kottayam’s story began long before 1949. The region had been part of the princely state of Travancore, and a Kottayam revenue division had existed since the nineteenth century. But the political reorganisation of 1949 created the modern district administration — a defining moment in the Kottayam we recognise today.

Why 1949 matters to this name It is used as a tribute to the year of Kottayam District’s birth — not as a claim that the KL05 1949 restaurant or brand existed in 1949.
THE CHARACTER OF KOTTAYAM

Letters. Legends. Latex. Lakes.

The Kottayam District Administration describes the district as the land of “letters, legends, latex and lakes” — four words that capture its intellectual, cultural, agricultural and natural identity.

Letters

Kottayam’s extraordinary connection to education, publishing and Malayalam literature earned it the name Akshara Nagari — the City of Letters.

Legends

From old kingdoms and sacred places to political movements and community traditions, Kottayam carries centuries of stories within its towns and villages.

Latex

Rubber plantations transformed the district’s landscape and economy, making Kottayam one of India’s best-known centres for natural rubber.

Lakes

With Vembanad to the west, backwaters, paddy fields, canals and wetlands are inseparable from the visual and cultural memory of Kottayam.
